School Presentations: I offer assemblies and classroom workshops designed to challenge and inspire
students from 4th grade through High School. Assemblies include audience
and Q&A. Writing classes are part lecture/part writing activity. As one Junior High student said in her thank you letter, “ I want to thank you for entertaining our class with an activity. The other speaker didn’t give an activity, which was boring. I was thinking to myself finally, something I actually get to do myself!”
More Responses:
“Thanks for helping out with the magic worlds by giving us the 'formula' of how to create, well, just about anything!” 5th Grader, Spiritridge
Elementary
“Your Sensory Spill writing exercise really is going to help me do more creative things with my writing! It was fun doing it together with the whole class.” 7th grader. Totem Junior High
“I like it when she screamed because of the mice. I like LOUD stuff!” 3rd grader. Maltby Elementary
SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES
1 to 4 assemblies per day at your school.
Needs: PowerPoint capabilities, lectern, clip on mike.
WATER FOR LIFE –Creative Solutions
Can fantasy fiction inspire real change? While doing research of drought-ridden areas to create a believable landscape for Stealing Death, Janet learned more than one billion people worldwide do not have access to clean water. In this dynamic assembly Janet goes behind the scenes to show how creative problem solving works in fiction and in life. Linking Stealing Death’s fantasy setting with real world water shortage, Janet educates and empowers students to use creative problem solving skills to make a difference in their world. (Part of author’s proceeds go to PlayPumps International) http://www.janetleecarey.com//PlayPumps (PowerPoint) Upper Middle Grades, Middle School & High-School
DREAM CATCHER- Finding and Following Your Dreams
Janet set the goal of becoming a published writer at age ten. She gives an entertaining look at the many ups and downs of her long writing journey from rejection years to eventual publication, awards, and movie deals. The assembly covers the expected highs and lows that are a part of achieving any life goal, and gives students the tools to set goals and begin the step-by-step journey to reach their dreams. Handouts for follow-up classroom activities included. (PowerPoint) Upper Middle Grades, Middle School & High-School
WORDS ON THE WING gives an inspiring view of the writing life and behind the scenes story background to her novels. Janet shares the nitty-gritty of the writing and revision process. The assembly includes student involvement with exciting hands-on writing props hidden in “The Falconer’s Trunk”. (PowerPoint) Upper Middle Grades & Middle Schools
WORKSHOPS
Classrooms or double up classes in library setting
STORY SOURCE: Finding Drama in Everyday Life
There's no such thing as a boring story when the writer focuses on the core dramatic elements of story structure. Janet uncovers the dramatic elements hidden in our everyday lives, and teaches students how to write compelling tales based on their own experiences. Workshop combines lecture and writing exercises to sharpen students' writing skills for fiction and nonfiction.
THE RULES OF MAGIC: Writing Convincing Fantasy
It’s commonly thought that fantasy stories are easy to write because there are “no rules.” Just the opposite is true. Fantasy writers understand that the vast freedoms fantasy offers requires a strict set of rules. Break the rules and the magic disappears. How can writers learn to create within this paradox? Come explore the rules of magic.
WORLD BUILDING: Creating Fantasy Creatures and Landscapes from the Ground Up.
From ecosystems to interdependent life forms, children learn to create consistent settings for their characters. This interactive hands-on activity is done in small groups. (Students love this one! Two-hour minimum)
